What to know
- How many chairs do I actually need?
- One per grown-up, then add 10 to 15% on top. At a kids’ birthday the children barely sit down, but more adults show up than you say are coming: grandma arrives, the neighbour, the cousin who was passing by. It is the most common mistake and the easiest to avoid.
- How many people fit at a table?
- A 6-foot rectangular table comfortably seats 8. A 60-inch round one seats 8 to 10 depending on how tight you want it. The trade rule is 24 to 30 inches per guest: any less and people eat with their elbows touching.
- How much space between tables?
- 5 to 6 feet, so people can get past with a plate without asking. In a normal Miami backyard that means fewer tables fit than you would guess looking at an empty yard. Send a photo of the space and we tell you how many actually fit.
- What about rain or midday sun?
- In Miami the one o’clock sun weighs as much as the four o’clock rain. If the party is at midday and there is no shade, the canopy stops being an extra and becomes the thing that keeps the grown-ups there. We tell you when quoting, not afterwards.
